You’re skimming the fitness and training magazines, and you always seem to see the same things written on the pages. Meal, shake. Meal, shake. Meal, shake. Unfortunately, due to your sensitive stomach or just plain choosy palette, you have zero interest in adding protein shakes to your daily diet plan.
For some people, such talk would border on heretic. How dare you consider a meal plan without protein shakes? Well, you might be shocked to learn that for the roughly 1 million years that human beings roamed the earth before companies started churning out protein in large white labeled tubs, some human beings were actually able to get in terrific shape, looking and feeling better. They actually made muscular gains through exercise and eating wisely, and they did it without scoops of whey. So a million years of history is telling us that it can be done. Ignore the magazines!
You just need to find quickly digested, low calorie meals which can be prepared quickly and eaten on the run. This is what makes protein shakes so desirable. Zero fat means they reach the bloodstream in 20 to 30 minutes. They are shook up and drank in less than a minute. But they’re not the only way to reach your goal!
Leftover chicken is always an easy bet. Dipped in a little fat free salad dressing or tossed into a bed of lettuce, you can enjoy fat free protein (just as with any lean meat such as turkey) in just a few minutes. That is, if you don’t mind all the chewing! Keep a cooler handy for whatever perishable protein you bring along for your daily travels.
Another idea is to hard boil some eggs. Chop them in half, dump most of the yolks, and throw them into a Ziploc bag to be added to your daily cooler. They taste excellent alone or with just a dash of salt, and can be eaten very quickly. Just be aware of your co-workers, who may or may not be huge fans of that memorable eggy aroma!
Protein bars are also sold in just about any gas station or restaurant (with the candy bars, as they often contain just as much sugar). However, if you are looking for a way to chomp down 25 grams of protein in the time it takes a red light to change to green at an intersection, then bars may be just what the doctor ordered!
