Last week a buddy of mine asked what I thought of this comparison, I honestly didn’t know how to answer the guy. They’re like two different worlds to me that I can appreciate both on their own merits. I know this is a furious debate for a lot of bodybuilders and lifters, lemme know what you think.

Totally Arnold.
Still Arnold.
Ronnie WINS
we have two heros
every time has his man
It woould have been a better comparison of a cut Sergio Oliva to Ronnie and Sergio competed with Arnold head to head.
No doubt , the myth (Sergio) in his hay was utterly fantastic. But when you see the total mass and definition of Mr Coleman – well–!As time goes on they get bigget and better. Platz had the legs in his day. Dickerson the calves. He once told us that his brother had bigger calves than he and never touched a weight. He also said that the only part of you that can tell the difference between a synthetic and a natural vitamin was your pocket book.
Anyone who tries to tellyo that so and so is better than the other –well they just haven’t been there. End of story.Yet – I must add that Metzner was the only one who got all 300 points TWICE. Yes a perfect score – that must tell us something. I just don’t know what though. KEEP PUMPING. (this from a 77 year old aficionado, now giving the HD routine of Mentzer a try out) See ya in the gymn.
ARNOLD FOREVER!!!!
Not fair to compare the two. Both come from different eras where supplementation, training methods, & technology are very different. It’s all come a long way. Both are the best from their respectable eras.
I prefer Arnold, because he was more symmetrical.
Ronnie is Huge. Arnold is Aesthetic. Both have unique physiques. But I like the Arnold physique rather than Ronnie. For me Arnold is the winner hands down. look at this muscle belly they are awesome. I would say just awesome muscles and a great physique. Arnie Arnie Arnie
Ronnie Coleman as far as density and mass, even if he is a cop! I thought steroids were illegal to use or buy then how does Arnold and all the others including Ronnie get away with this?
Arnold is wins better lines and proportion throughout
Well, both are great bodybuilders. Arnold was way better than his fellow competitors in his time, that’s why he won Mr.Olympia 7 times. He did what was required. Infact he was ahead of his time. His arms can still stand upto the present day competitors.
Now, Ronnie has done the same, whatever Arnold did but Ronnie did it for the present day requirements. He did what he had to do to win Mr.Olympia 8 times. So, both of them in my opinion have had great genetics and have slogged to get where they are. Respect to them both.
arnold can`t stand up to ronnie,no contest.
I have seen photos of Arnold (prior to the 1975 contest photos you posted) where he is Bigger!…for example, the 1970-1972 contest photos of Arnold competing against the only bodybuilder who ever seriously challenged him,Sergio Oliva!….Also,it’s common knoledge today, that,if Arnold had had today’s advantages in sports nutrition and hormone technology(afer all,in the early/mid 1970′s, testosterone / steroids technology was still pretty much in it’s infancy),we would not even be having this debate!
You can’t even compare the 2 the world came a long ways since arnold was on stage he looks like a tren ager compared side by side no comparison can be made but standing on his own he looks good.
On todays drugs, Arnold would be a straight FREAK!!!!!!
I am a big Arnold fan. Ronnie is very impressive in his own right. His back seems to be larger in proportion to Arnold’s, he is bigger and thicker. However, Arnold’s overall physique edge’s Ronnie’s in regards to being ripped, shredded, defined, AND proportionate. Like I said in the beginning…I am a big Arnold fan.
Both athletes phenomenal in their era but in my view Ronnie is more over powering just by his sheer size and his symetry.
Two different times, different chemistry, but two guys who but in the most work
Both bodybuilding icons, Massive monsters from different generations. Two men who worked and dedicated there lives to what only some of us dream of becoming and accomplishing in our lifetimes! I gotta say i cant choose either one because i appreciate both fasiques!
Like you, I appreciate both physiques. But I have to say, I love the blown out proportions of Ronnie Coleman. I got to see him once, 6 weeks out from the Olympia. He was mind boggeling! And when he spoke, very sincere. However, Arnold is one of a kind and always his physique will be admired by me as well.
Jay Cutler’s lats extended almost to his waist where as Coleman’s were short by 8-10 inches. Watch the video again and see if this is not so.
Both were thick and dense and cut but I think Cutters was a bit more complete in its development.
In reading the remarks it is evident who do not pump iron but sit in front of the TV eating twinkles. When you get my age “You’ll be sorry” (If you live that long.)
Ronnie is a little more cut and some other muscles are more defined, but personaly Arnold looks better, and also in my oppion a darker guy looks different than a lighter skin guy. Thanks
Hard choice it is. When/if I reach the age of 55 I’d like to have a body like Arnold did then. At my age now I would be satisfied with the physique of Ronnie. Then again….
Arnold!!! All the way! Lets be real for a moment! Everyone says that if arnold competed today he wouldn’t last with the guys of today. Well in reality he would would dominate just like he did in his time. For many reasons, the biggest reason being that he was extreme at competing. He had to be the best or he wouldn’t even try. That was his mentality! Just like back in his time he would set the standered now. Ronnie isn’t the best! He got lucky in a fue of his win’s. He was just the biggest, not the best.
Here it is Both incredible, to compare there really shouldn’t be a comparison. Bodybuilding today and the years of Arnold, and many greats like Dave Draper. Much different, honestly if anyone has an admiration for the body as a temple. Then we should note the name Arnold as the Great he set a standard. In a sense it is like comparing many basket ball players in the NBA that have seemingly surpassed Michael Jordan, yet when Jordan was at his all time highs he still today is looked upon as a “How”. That could be said with both Ronnie and Arnold both super trainers super heroe types in the bodybuilding community. If we went into all the aspects of body building both have set standards. Some would argue Ronnie was more of a steroid and drug user I do not think this should be any issue as many athelets use many things. Yet think about it, Arnold did not use as much in the realm of androgenic help I promise yet should that be an issue when every ounce of a bodybuilder is being examined on stage. No I think not, yet I would love to see us go back a little bit train and use less. Both heroes to me, to train and have a passion for bodybuilding like these legends is a super passion that many may never understand. I like Ronnie Coleman alot great guy, love the Arnold really great example looking at some of the clips it was very hard for me to compare in fact the definition in muscle groups were incredibly close the difference I think Ronnie surpasse in weight and body far ratio yet it is very difficult to see this. So like you who sent this email to me a bodybuilder that doesn’t compete I respect both and say this to this day there will be more and more who try to surpass until bodybuilding doesn’t look like bodybuilding anymore. We are there I have seen non competive bodybuilders that go beyond the above yet do not appear to be what it is to be a real bodybuilder and sadly enough live short lives. Take care staff and lets go back less oils less see how we can carve and add muscle yet be symetrical because both of the above certainly did to live up to legends hey we can yet to do it the way they did that is strength. No comparison really standard setters when I see a 48 inch arms and I have that is just a little too much and a waste of 28 inches no that does not look heroic it is out of control…..Ronnie Jackson Arnold yeah……..
they both look same but arnold is look more slim on tummy and great shape but ronnie is my recommand 1st.
you cant compare arnold to ronnie the steroids today are soo much better than what they had back then
you are right man. both are good in there own time .
tough to make my mind up.
you are right man. both are good in their own time .
tough to make my mind up.
uppers are very good but arnolds legs is not big enough to match Ronnie’s legs.
both great bodybuilders of there time like comparing muscles cars of the past to the present depends on your taste.but always remember arnold paved the way for the bodybuilders of today also nutrition has advandced so much in the next twenty years we will compare someone else
THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO ME. ARNOLD WINS HANDS DOWN. ARNOLD AND LOUIE BACK IN THE DAY WERE THE BEST BUILT. THE NEWER GUYS ARE TO “BLOCKY” LOOKING. I DON’T KNOW IF IT IS THE GROWTH HORMONE OR WHAT. THERE LEGS ARE WAY TOO BIG TOO. THERE WAIST IS TOO BIG, EVEN THOAGH THEY ARE NOT FAT. ARNOLD WAS ACTUALLY SKINNY WITH A 57″ CHEST.
ARNOLD’S ARMS WERE JUST AS BIG TOO, BUT LIKE I SAID WITHOUT BEING AS “BLOCKY”.
I think Arnold looks much more natural. Even though both of these guys used steroids, Arnold just looks more natural.
Arnold hands down………..
There is no comparison! Arnold with all his greatness,ok for back in the sixtys and seventys he could not even fairly stand up to Sergio Oliva and Mike Mentzter. if you would bring him up against MR Coleman,Arnold would have a hard time in the state level let alone making the Olympia stage.NO comparison. I’m just sayin.
Ronnie is Def. Bigger than Arnold….Arnold was Hugh for “His” day…But I believe that New Tech. & “Supplements” helped Ronnie acheive Greatness !!!
I think it really does not matter, I give both of them props to have such determination and self discipline to look that good , and have a physique that well sculptured
ronnie hands down because my opinion a ripped sheleton doesn’t look empressy to me.
I would have to say Arnold he looks more real! Natural! Ronnie just looks too swelled up and unescesary bulkiness!! Almost looks uncomfortable!!
1. RONNIE
2. ARNOLD
Man! Ronnie’s back just shut the show down, just too many nooks and crannies, the MF just got it. In the 70′s them Weider boys was pushin Arnie real tough, and they should have (POLITICS), that is why the industry is what it is today. But Sergio Oliva was the baddest, I love you Arnold, but in the 70′s they would push Sergio like Arnold. Uh, hey ya’ll please look at AL BECKLES he was totally overlooked.
come on,where would bodybuilding be if not for arnold..he made it what it is today for coleman, cutler and the rest.
there are many great men,but arnold made people love the sport..even the older generation back then loved arnold because he was the man..
not fair to compare two diffrent eras. The gear and supps we have today are far better than what Arnie had in his day. However I reackon if we jumped in a time machine and brought Arnie in his prime into todays time with the gear and supps we have today he would win hands down. Ronnie is not that much bigger than all his competitors but Arnie was miles ahead of all his competitors that tells you something.
ARNOLDS ARMS AND CHEST ARE EVEN BY TODAYS STANDARDS ARE STILL THE BEST HIS SYMMETRY AND FLOWING PHYSIQUE MAKE HIM NUMBER 1 HE LOOKS A GREEK GOD NOT BLOATED THE PERFECT PHYSIQUE
Wow! I love both guys. I have met each of them personally too, Ronnie at the Olympia and Arnold at a social gathering. I prefer Arnold’s physique, because his proportions and symmetry seems like a natural progression from the heroes like Reg Park and John Grimek. Arnold was actually old school. Sure Ronnie excels in certain ways that are obvious in thickness and development, but Arnold looks like a weight “athlete.”
Arnold was at the top of his game in his time and Ronnie is at the top in his time. Times have changed. Stronger steroids, heavier workouts, different techniques. In the end both are great. Question is. . . Where are they now. How does Arnold look without a shirt?
Both men are incredible athletes and both were the standout peformers of their own respective era’s. I cannot believe Ronnies mass, density and definition as opposed to Arnold, but i still believe that Arnold would have to be the best. My reasons are as follows
1.) Arnold competed in an era where there were no HGH-roids yes but even then they did not have Tren and some of the others, as anyone familiar with roids knows todays juice is better, yes we still have the standard deca and dianabol but Arnolds era would never of heard of T3, somatropin and other “exotics”
2.) Arnold himself was predominantly and ectomorph whereas Ronnie is a typical Meso so Arnold had to work extremely hard to attain the level of development that he had
3.) Arnold was not a “massive person” (6’2″ and 240lbs in olympia mode,as opposed to Ronnie who was 5’11″ and 295lbs @ the 2006 olympia) but he had an illusion of size by having a small refined midsection which is something that all of todays “mass monsters” do not have due to the excessive amounts of juice they take
At the end of the day all the past and present olympia competitors all have a potential that us “ordinary Joes” do not and body building is a sport that is won purely on the judges preception of what they wish to see
Everyone of course has their own opinion and my observation is that Arnold has better, fuller biceps and is more natural looking but Ronnie is more massive, more defined, better legs and clearly the product of the latest of modern day chemical knowledge. I have been following the iron game since the 60′s and I wish every fan could have seen Sergio Oliva in his prime. With the physique he had back then even today he would be in contention for the MR Olympia title. He did compete against Arnold but Arnold had the financial support of the capitalist Weider bros and in America that appears to the path to success in anything so the rest is history. There’s a reason they called Sergio “THE MYTH”, having defected from Castro’s communist regime Sergio was also a better total athlete. I had the pleasure of watched him compete in actual weightlifting competitions at the Duncan and Irving Pk YMCA’s in the late 60′s early 70′s. Those were exciting times in the iron game.
There is a huge difference between what is aesthetically pleasing to the human eye and what is more freaky and wins shows. Separate the two and you can see clearly!
Ronnie does look bigger, but personaly I like Arnold’s build better. He was a bit more lean than Ronnie is, Still big though. Arnold wins for me, but Ronnie is still an animal.
