Times are tough. The economy is down and will probably remain so for a few more years. Regardless of who you’re voting for in the election, you probably already know that things aren’t going to be turning around anytime soon. Are you earning less than you’d like to be making in your field? Or are things so tough that you aren’t able to work in the same area you got your degree? If you’re scratching your head wondering what skill set you could possibly offer any employer, and you completely love bodybuilding & fitness, then perhaps you should consider a career in personal training!
You’ve trained for a few years, and you have a great physique. Sure, you don’t have a piece of paper giving you any credibility (yet!) but you sure have designed training and eating plans for your friends and family, and gotten many of them into shape. You look around your gym and you know you have the people skills and knowledge of the iron game to get any of these people into better shape. So what are you waiting for? Spend $200 and get certified. Read up on any areas where you may be a little weak, and start looking around! Start by considering any of your friends who may be out of shape. Train them at a free or reduced rate and take plenty of before & after images. Use Facebook and other social media (and perhaps your own website) to promote your ability to transform a person. Remember that anyone you meet wants to get into shape, and if you offer the solution for doing so at a very affordable price, then you will always be in demand!
Keep in mind that many personal trainers often move into management roles. After training clients for a few years, they may be hired to run the gym where they work. Or they may manage an entire team of personal trainers. Heck, many trainers, thanks to their leadership and people skills, will secure other employment as a result of chitchat with their clients. If you train enough doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs (the kind of people who can afford $60 an hour for a lifting buddy) then you many just stumble into a “help wanted” situation where you end up finding a great job.
Keep your head up. The economy will turn around eventually, and one day you will find the job you want. In the meantime, why not see how you fare in the world of making people look, feel and perform better – the world of personal training!
